Compton Village Fete Saturday 17 May, from 12 noon to 4.30pm

With just a few weeks more to go, we’re getting ready for the Fete. If you’re a Facebook user, stay up to date with the latest news at www.facebook.com/ComptonVillageFete. Proceeds from this day of fun in the (fingers crossed) sun will benefit a range of local causes, including the Allotments, Compton Club, Compton Little Theatre, Compton NEWS, St. Nicholas Church, the Village Hall, and various village projects. This year, we are also supporting two very worthy charities based at Royal Surrey Council Hospital: BRIGHT Cancer Care and Sophie’s Legacy. BRIGHT Cancer Care (one of Ken Miller's chosen charities) focuses on improving the lives of people affected by gastro-intestinal (GI) and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) cancers. Sophie’s Legacy provides essentials for parents staying with their children in hospital, including snacks, as well as organising pizza nights for children. Funds raised will be directed to local projects at Royal Surrey County Hospital. We can’t wait to welcome you to this year’s Fete. Don’t forget to bring plenty of cash to take full advantage of all the great activities and stalls!

THE FETE IS RUN PURELY BY VOLUNTEERS AND YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU! Stall volunteers. Help is needed for the Bouncy Castles, BBQ, Tea Tent, Beer Tent, Parking, Pick-a-Card, the Loseley ice cream van and many other stalls. Even an hour of your time will make a big difference! To volunteer, please contact Danielle Rowe at daniellerowe@hotmail.com or on 07957 417943. Tea Tent. This beloved spot, in the Compton Club, provides a relaxing space for visitors to enjoy a cup of tea and homemade treats. Historically run by members of the Compton Little Theatre, they only have time to run the legendary Human Fruit Machine this year but will still be baking delicious cakes. If you’re interested in running the Tea Tent or helping out, please contact Miranda Wells at wellsmiranda@icloud.com or on 07989 441927. If you have a food safety certificate, we’d really love to hear from you. Set up/take down volunteers. A small but dedicated team works hard to prepare for the event and take everything down afterwards. They could always use more hands! Please contact James Saunders, jameswgsaunders5@hotmail.com or Nick Palmer on 01483 810663 /nicholas.palmer6@btinternet.com.

Roots for the Future - Eco-therapy sessions for upaid carers

Roots for the Future is offering unpaid carers a “green prescription” of eco-therapy sessions. Some sessions will be practicing mindfulness at the community garden in Farncombe. Others will be forest bathing sessions at Birtley woodland. Roots for the Future has funding from Surrey County Council which subsidises 80% of the costs so that the carer only needs to pay £5. We have funding for EIGHT sessions that will take place from Spring until early Autumn. If you or anyone you know is an unpaid carer, these sessions could help with maintaining wellbeing while caring for a loved one. Francesca, who will be running the sessions, is a trained mindfulness and meditation teacher, a trained forest bathing guide and a mental health first aider. Arts Society Woking

On Tuesday 8 April, ARTS SOCIETY WOKING’s talk is More Than Just Buns. Eating out in Georgian London. Georgians of all classes dined out in pubs, coaching inns, French ordinaries and confectioners. They also ate all kinds of street food and had an almost insatiable appetite for buns. On a “journey” through London we will discover the early morning drinks consumed on the street before dawn, ‘nunchions’ served at coaching inns, Billingsgate dinners, confectioners’ cakes, syllabubs and ices, the proverbially thin ham dished up to diners at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, as well as the Jewish takeaway foods of the East End and even London’s first ‘Indian’ restaurant. Our journey will be illustrated from prints, paintings and broadsides of the period, some long neglected as a source for a forgotten but fascinating part of our Georgian ancestors’ way of life. Lecturer Peter Ross has a BA in the History of Art, Design and Film, an MA in London history, a PhD and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Until recently Principal Librarian at Guildhall Library, he has for 20 years lectured on a broad range of topics including the history of English books, portraiture, and London history. Talks start at 10.30am but doors open 9.45am for tea and coffee. The venue is Normandy Village Hall, GU3 2DT. Members may bring a visitor, who may want to make a donation to the Society of £6.
