Milford Probus Club

After a friendly lunch, on Friday 15 November Milford Probus’ members and visitors (always welcome) will hear a gripping personal tale of one of the great sailing races. In October 1976 The Times advertised for crew for the 1977/78 Whitbread Round the World Race on Great Britain II, a 77-foot sloop. Ian Worley, an experienced sailor who felt like a change from stockbroking, seized the chance to enter the nine-month race. Great Britain II set off with a largely novice crew. Doubts about their capabilities proved wrong. They completed the race, respected and experienced, taking overall first place for first boat home. Worley’s film of the race went out on cinema release with the James Bond film Moonraker. Lunch is at 12.30pm (pre-lunch drinks from 12pm), Godalming Masonic Hall, GU7 1RQ. If interested visit www.milfordprobus.com, or book a lunch (book the Monday before please) with Jon Warnke .(jgwarnke@btinternet.com/07818 602699).
